Violence in Relationships Committee

The Campbell River Violence in Relationships (VIR) Committee is a partnership of agencies and organizations working collaboratively to provide efficient, accessible, and respectful services to individuals who have experienced gender-based and sexual violence in Campbell River, and surrounding areas (Gold River, Sayward, and Quadra and Cortes Islands).

VIR Committee members work together to identify gaps in services, remove barriers in accessing programming, and make recommendations for change to improve service delivery. The VIR Committee also offers training and education opportunities to increase awareness of the services available in our community, and public education on issues related to gender-based and sexual violence.

The VIR Committee brings together representatives from agencies and organizations across various sectors who respond to incidents of gender-based and sexual violence. This includes organizations such as the transition house, community based victim services, counselling and outreach programs, Indigenous services, health care, police, corrections, child protection, and multicultural supports.

Gender-based violence (GBV) refers to violence committed against someone based on their gender identity, gender expression or perceived gender. In Canada, GBV disproportionately impacts women, girls, and marginalized populations; such as Indigenous Peoples, LGBTQ2S+ people (particularly transgender, gender non-conforming, and non-binary individuals), those living in northern, rural and remote communities, people with disabilities, newcomers, children and youth, and seniors (from Status of Women Canada, Government of Canada website). The VIR Committee aims to respond to all incidents of gender-based and sexual violence by providing a coordinated, consistent, and proactive approach.
